The Homecoming Mum Tradition
The homecoming tradition dates back to the year 1911. It began at the University of Missouri when the Athletic Director, Mr. Chester Brewer, became afraid that fans and alumni would not attend the game due to a change in location. So to try and entice people to make the trip and come he challenged the alumni to return home for a great celebration including, parades, parties, a rally, and of course the big game! Over 9,000 fans showed up. This became the first recorded official homecoming game. Now all teams, including schools, colleges, little league teams, and major league football teams celebrate this annual tradition.
A big part of the southern homecoming tradition is the Homecoming Mum. Homecoming Mums come in all shapes and sizes and usually are given as gifts by a significant other, a parent, or a close friend. Decorations on the mum, including trinkets, ribbons, garlands, bells, and braids are chosen to represent the wearer of the mum/garter. For example, a band member might enjoy a music note on their mum/garter, and a senior may enjoy a graduation cap on the bear of their mum/garter. Most everyone wants to show their school spirit and pride through their mums/garters so it is common to see mums adorned with mascot trinkets, paw charms, pride related ribbons, and everything on their mum in their school colors! Since the mums are now made of silk flowers and plastic trinkets, they can last a long time and most people hang them on their bedroom walls as a trophy and a reminder of that special day. Whatever you decide to decorate your homecoming mum/garter with and whatever you decide to do with it after the big day, this is a tradition you will be glad to partake in!
